Bali is one of the best-value places in the world to base yourself for a week, a month or a season — but only if you know how to separate the honest listings from the ones designed to catch you out. After hosting hundreds of guests between Seminyak and Canggu, here is the checklist we actually use.
1. Verify the photos are the real room
The oldest trick in the book is a listing built from stock photography or images of a completely different property. Ask for a short video walkthrough filmed on the day, or a photo with today’s date written on a note. Any honest host will send it within minutes. If a “host” stalls, dodges, or only ever sends the same three polished images, walk away.
2. Read the price all the way to checkout
A tempting nightly rate means nothing if it doubles once cleaning fees, service charges and “local taxes” are stacked on top. Ask for the all-in total for your exact dates, in writing, before you pay a deposit. Our own rule is simple: the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
3. Check the neighbourhood, not just the property
A beautiful villa on a noisy main road, or a studio a scooter-ride from anything, will sour a long stay fast. Drop the pin into a map and look at what’s actually walkable. Between Seminyak and Canggu you want quiet gated lanes that are still close to cafes, a beach and reliable transport.
4. Confirm the safety basics
Ask directly: are there smoke alarms, secure locks and a gated entry? Is there a real local host reachable on WhatsApp if something goes wrong at midnight? A host who answers these calmly and specifically is a host who has thought about your safety.
5. Get the cancellation terms up front
Fair, clearly-stated cancellation terms are a sign of a professional operation. Vague or aggressively non-refundable policies are a red flag — especially for longer bookings where plans can shift.
